In a changing, somewhat turbulent environment, SAAA is the one and only voice to ensure that the audiologist is recognized as a force and that the rights and interests of audiologists are considered by legislators and policy makers.
A professional body needs to offer its members a body that has both national and international credibility, and which provides accessible support for the individual practitioner. This body needs to actively promote positive public awareness of the profession, negotiate with other professional bodies, and address the needs of the community it serves.
SAAA offers its members the benefit of belonging to an association that is internationally recognized as an affiliated member of IS A (International Association of Audiology), and which is nationally the body representing the specific needs of Audiologists in South Africa.

Continuing Professional Development requirements
Audiologists registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) must maintain a minimum of 30 valid Continuing Education Units (CEUs). This must include at least 25 General/Clinical CEUs and five CEUs relating to ethics, human rights or health law.
Each CEU remains valid for 12 months from the date on which the accredited activity took place or was completed. Practitioners must therefore participate in CPD activities continuously and obtain new CEUs as older units expire. The previous requirement to build up and maintain a balance of 60 CEUs no longer applies.
The HPCSA’s CPD programme is administered under section 26 of the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974). The previous system of randomly selecting practitioners for CPD compliance checks has been discontinued, and practitioners are now expected to remain compliant at all times.
For locally accredited CPD activities, authorised CPD service providers are responsible for submitting practitioners’ attendance or completion records directly to the HPCSA. Practitioners should monitor their CPD status regularly through the HPCSA online portal and follow up with the relevant service provider if earned CEUs do not appear.
Practitioners should only upload supporting evidence themselves where the CEUs have not been submitted by a service provider—for example, certain internationally completed activities—or when requested by the HPCSA.
Although CPD service providers are not currently required to issue certificates, practitioners are encouraged to retain any certificates or other proof of attendance or completion provided for their own records.
Community service audiologists are not required to comply with the CPD requirements during their community service year. However, they may participate in accredited activities and accrue CEUs during this period.
Please note that the South African Audiology Association (SAAA) cannot vouch for the credentials of any CPD events that have not been accredited by the SAAA.
